Window trim - outside

This warm weather has been too good to pass up the opportunity to do a bit of outside painting. Got the outside window trim finished except for one piece!

In the beginning...all the pieces cut

On the first day...painted one side and started painting the other side.

On the second day...painted the trim with a second coat of paint in the morning, then put up the trim in the afternoon.

Starboard side...done.

Port side kitchen window done...

Port side both windows done...

Tongue side bathroom window...almost finished.  I need to rip the bottom piece or get a narrower one.

So there you have it.  One more thing crossed off the list.  I also painted the porch posts which you can see on the starboard side picture.  The whole porch roof needs another coat of paint yet.

Oooh, aaah!  That makes for two blogs posts this week.  Hope y'all are feeling spoiled.

More little stuff...whew!

I can no longer use the excuse that it is too cold outside to work on the Bungalow. We have had record high temps. It is very pleasant.  So here's what I've been up to.

This little brown piece has been on the to-do list since I put the siding up on the door end of the house.  Well this morning I was putting something away in the shed and noticed the piece which already had the correct angle (I knew I had this piece, but thought I'd have to look a bit harder).  So I grabbed it and started with that. Now I can finish the trim around the door (need to buy a 1x6).

Next, I was getting up into the loft to get the laminate flooring that I had intended to cut today, and realized that I could put up my bathroom blinds because the window had been trimmed!  So, I got the blinds out of the loft and cut about an inch off the rods and they fit perfectly!

Here is the laminate I'll be using for the bathroom walls.  I want to test out my water connections before I put the wall covering on, but I figured I could cut the pieces so they are ready when I am.

This is the wall that needs some covering.

Also thought I'd give some welding a try...solvent welding that is.  I still need a tailpiece for the sink plumbing before I can put this all together, but it is coming along nicely.

I also made a list of the trim and plumbing pieces I need to finish up those things and I'll probably go purchase them on Tuesday when Mom's senior companion is here.

A note about the waste water.  I've been looking into gray water systems, and it seems there are some states that consider kitchen waste water as black water because of the food waste that ends up going down the kitchen drain.  Since I don't really know where the Bungalow with be planted eventually, I thought it would be a good idea to separate my bath drain from the kitchen drain.  So, my plumbing plan changed a little, but it is actually easier to plumb it the new way.

Kitchen and trim

The daylight showed that the paint needed another coat and now that is all finished!  Also, I changed my mind about the baseboard trim.  So now the baseboard trim is the same as the trim around the door.  I like it much better.  I also learned that I probably need a lesson in measuring trim.

Door trim...

Trim for the corners of the walls...

I only did the trim for the living room/kitchen. I still need to finish the kitchen window trim...only had enough for two sides. I'm also going to put trim on the built-in shelves next to the sink, so I have a bit more trim to buy and put up.

And on to the tile on the port side! I'm so happy with the tile in the kitchen!! Still need to grout it.

Port wall finished and painted!

Last two rows are finished!  In the kitchen...

...and over the storage loft.

I got so excited that I put up the trim on the storage loft too.

Next came the paint in the kitchen.  Before I make the last propane connection to the cooktop, I needed to paint behind the cabinets.  The weather is turning cold and wet again this weekend, so I wanted to finish the paint before that, but I was worried that it would be too cold.  So back to the heat dilemma.  I ended up putting the panel heater on an extension cord and mounting it on some blocks to get it off the floor.  I was a little worried after a couple of hours that it didn't seem any warmer.  I knew that it would take a while because the heater doesn't blow air, it works by convection.  When I went out this afternoon it was at least as warm as outside, unlike yesterday when it was colder inside than outside.  At least I know the insulation works.  Then when I went out tonight after Mom went to bed to paint the second coat, it was nice and cozy.  So, YAY! For the panel heater!

First coat...

...and finished with painting in the kitchen!  Actually, I need to look at it in the daylight to see if it needs another coat, but either way it is almost there!

Odds and ends

Odds and ends is quite appropriate for this post because nothing I accomplished this week seems related.  Oh well...

Remember last post I said I was going to have a little marshmallow roast? Well, here it is, fire and moon.  And the marshmallows were roasted to perfection.

So here is project #1.  Fixed the stairs so they don't wobble anymore.  I attached them to the house and put a temporary foundation-ish under them.

Next was that big clean-up I mentioned last week.  Amazing the porch is actually visible!

Next, I attached the weather stripping to the doorjamb. Exciting pic, I know.

And last, but not least I put the trim up on the sleeping loft - a 1x4 with braided rope underneath.  I got the rope idea from a Mexican restaurant in Springdale, UT, just outside of Zion National Park.  Good food too.

Wider view of the trim.

Small items

This week I'm feeling like I didn't accomplish much, but a little is better than nothing.  The tub platform started here.

Then added a little height.  In my attempt to not have any holes in the floor I had to find a drain for the tub that was quite low profile.  I originally thought I would need to build the tub platform out of 2x6 in order to accomodate the drain. But then I found a drain that would work with 2x4. Whew.

Then the platform itself is made of leftover chunks of 3/4" plywood.

Here it is complete...now I need to cut the hole for the drain and get the plumbing going. I'm also using shims to create a little bit of a slope for water draining.
Also, when I put in the water input I was still thinking I would be using 2x6 for the platform, so my water intake was too high.  I had to relocate it a bit lower, and fill in the original hole.  Didn't take a pic of that mess, but once it is painted I'm sure I'll be the only one who notices.  Need to get the shut-off valves for the sink and then I can test the water connections and finish that wall.

The other thing I did this week was paint the trim for the storage loft.  Started with a bit of pale green...

Added some darker green (it is sparkly if you see it in person)...

Then added some blue to the opposite side and blended it all together.

It is difficult to take a picture while attempting to hold the trim in place.  Here is my sad attempt.

The last thing I did this week, which doesn't have accompanying pictures, had to do with the bathtub.  I've had many ideas to create a slope in the tub to facilitate draining.  The first idea I tried failed pretty completely.  I mixed sand with plastidip and spread it around the bottom of the water trough creating a slope toward where the drain will be.  I think it would have actually worked if I had used finer sand, but alas, this week was spent chiseling the dried concoction out of the tub. I think the shims under the tub platform will be enough, but I'm still going to line the trough with a layer of plastidip. I tested the water-tightness and the trough is not leaking, but I want an extra layer of water seal.  So more on that coming up.

Stairs and a bit o' trim

I've been using a ladder to get into the bungalow until now.  Although sometimes I would just step right up onto the porch.  On days where I was in and out a lot both those methods got a little tiring.  Also, I've had more people showing interest in taking a peek inside.  Some of those people just don't do ladders.  So the stairs made the top of the list this week.

I must admit I like using the stairs much more than I anticipated. If I build another tiny house, the stairs will be at the top of the list sooner.

Bonus pic...my blueberry bushes decided to share a few berries with us (at least me). So I picked a small handful, sat on the porch of TB and ate them one at a time.  Sorry Mom. That's right, I didn't share.

The other thing that got finished this week is a bit of trim. Here is the gable end in the sleeping loft. The picture isn't very good...sorry. In the pic it looks like there is a big gap between the trim and the wall or ceiling, but there really isn't.

Perspective picture of the century...I'm standing on the floor under the ceiling fan (blades at the top of the pic), taking the picture toward the sleeping loft. Don't know if anyone but me can see it, but there is new trim down the peak of the ceiling...looks finished in real life. :)

The trim on the porch side loft. Same issue with gaps in the picture that aren't really there. Shadows do funny things.

Not feeling like I got very much accomplished this week and my biggest excuse is that it is too hot outside. Such a lame excuse because really it is only too hot for a few hours a day. The rest of the time I'm just being a wimp.  So, feeling like I need to step it up this week. Oh, and my cousin, Tami and her husband Tim are coming to visit this week and I'm SO excited to see them! Maybe I'll start posting a rogue's gallery of people who pass through the Bungalow...probably should have started that before.
